Here is a 1930s cast iron Gem Ice Shaver tool made by North Brothers Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Shaved ice--as in snow cones-- became a popular summertime treat during the late 1800s. By the early 1900s, handheld cast iron ice shavers like this 1930s Gem were must-have kitchen gadgets.
